#yourcovidstory in the 'New Normal'
An ongoing series #YOURCOVIDSTORY as a forum that brings together voices from different walks of life, a conversation that embraces personal realisations, a weave of stories, of celebrating little things and everyday lives within this ‘NEW NORMAL’. A collaboration between dD and Asmi Books.
mPower - Pandemic and Cyclone impacted community
The aftermath of Cyclone Amphan further turned a bad situation worse. Our visit to East Kolkata Wetlands in the midst of the pandemic revealed massive damages to the already fragile ecological system. Many trees have been uprooted, roads have caved in and collapsed into the canals. The built environment also suffered massive losses. Even within such adversity, we came across multiple examples of local efforts and ingenuity to better the general condition of the area. They are themselves cleaning the streets, repairing broken houses, sheltering the homeless community members. It is in this gesture that the true knowledge, value, ingenuity and potential of community collaboration shines through.
Through a crowdsourced fundraising campaign mPOWER, we enforced collective power of public to empower the community children. At Bamanghata High School and Kheadaha High School from Standard 9 to Standard 12 distributed basic ration to match the PDS level along with pulses for nutritive supplements and masks for safety of children and community. It provided some relief to face their immediate crisis.
With the support and valuable contributions made by many this was possible. Wonders of Waste and the Consulate of the Federal Republic of Germany, Kolkata also partnered in the process. It is our collective responsibility to do everything possible to ensure the lives, livelihoods and stability of this future generation.
On the occasion of World Environment Day, 2020 dD and KCC presented 'Weaving Sustainable Interfaces', a webinar that initiated pertinent, important dialogues about our immediate environment and opened up a collaborative space to start looking beyond our own selves to build circuits of resilience amongst fellow humans, other organisms and the environment at large.
